It is a long time since we last talked to each other. During the last years I have been involved in understanding STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH in USA. 

 

Since a lot of Indian students plan to come to USA to study, it is important before they come to know the reality that exists today in USA campuses in regard to mental health. In this way when they come they can be protected from the existed perils. 

 

I have become aware of a considerable number of suicides involving Indian students here in our campus and elsewhere. 

 

Please consider the article I recently wrote and use it any way you decide that will benefit AMRITA students and in general Indian students. You know better than me the causes. 

 

Perhaps it is a good idea to be translated in some major Indian language so parents can read it also.

At the BRI Forum, China Consolidates  the Project of the Century On May 14-15, the largest development project of all times, the Belt and Road Initiative, held its first international highlevel conference in Beijing, in the presence of representatives of more than 100 nations, including 29 heads of state and government. In his keynote speech on May 14, Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed once again what readers of this newsletter have long known: in pursuing the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China has no geopolitical interest, but wants to achieve a “model of win-win cooperation” (cf. below). Finally, some western media have begun to present this idea correctly, although coverage remains insufficient. The BRI already involves over $950 billion in investments committed long-term to some 900 projects. It was announced at this forum alone that China’s development banks and new funds have added $115 billion in new commitments. Xi emphasized the difficult but necessary task of coordinating project design, economic development planning, and industrial mobilization among the participating countries, as well as financing by national credit. The Belt and Road financing, Xi said, must be risk-free, in an implicit critique of the casinodominated western financial system, which is bankrupt and incapable of generating credit. Helga Zepp-LaRouche, founder of the Schiller Institute and a pioneer in the political campaign to launch the Belt and Road Initiative under the original name of the “New Silk Road”, intervened at the Beijing forum as part of the think-tank panels. China Daily and People’s Daily covered her interventions, while Xinhua ran an interview with her on the eve of the Forum, in which Mrs. LaRouche stressed the importance of a long-term perspective, based on a scientific and technological driver (cf. below). Of particular importance was the intervention by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the main strategic ally of President Xi, at the plenary session May 14. In welcoming and endorsing the BRI, Putin stated that the Eurasian Economic Union, initiated by Russia, has similar views to the Chinese on Eurasian integration. He called on European nations to be active part of the new effort. “We would welcome the involvement of our European colleagues from the EU states in this partnership. This would (…) allow us to realise a unique opportunity to create a common cooperation framework from the Atlantic to the Pacific – for the first time in history.”
Whereas some European leaders have visibly endorsed this proposal – Italy’s Gentiloni, the Czech Republic’s Zeman, Greece’s Tsipras who were present in Beijing, Germany’s response has not on the level required by its political and historical role. As for the EU institutions, they have actively spread disinformation on and hostility towards the BRI. President Trump did not take up Helga Zepp-LaRouche’s call to personally attend the Forum, but he did send a positive signal by dispatching a high-level delegation led by National Security Council senior director for East Asia Matthew Pottinger. Pottinger, who speaks fluently mandarin, spoke at one of the events at the summit on Sunday afternoon. According to Agence France Presse , he said that American companies are ready to get involved in China’s “project of the century.” Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post reported that Pottinger said U.S. companies and the U.S. Embassy in China had formed an “American Belt and Road Working Group.” The Belt and Road Initiative Explained by Its Architect To clear up confusion on the Chinese initiative sown by media reports, we have decided to run a few excerpts from President Xi’s keynote speech at the plenary session of the Forum on May 14. He referred to the success of the program by evoking a Chinese saying: “Peaches and plums do not speak, but they are so attractive that a path is formed below the trees.” He further explained that “China will enhance friendship and cooperation with all countries involved in the Belt and Road Initiative on the basis of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. We are ready to share practices of development with other countries, but we have no intention to interfere in other countries’ internal affairs, export our own social system and model of development, or impose our own will on others. In pursuing the Belt and Road Initiative, we will not resort to outdated geopolitical maneuvering. “What we hope to achieve is a new model of win-win cooperation. We have no intention to form a small group detrimental to stability, what we hope to create is a big family of harmonious co-existence. “Industries are the foundation of economy. We should deepen industrial cooperation so that industrial development plans of different countries will complement and reinforce each other. Focus should be put on launching major projects. We should strengthen international cooperation on production capacity and equipment manufacturing, and seize new development op

portunities presented by the new industrial revolution to foster new businesses and maintain dynamic growth. “Finance is the lifeblood of modern economy. Only when the blood circulates smoothly can one grow. We should establish a stable and sustainable financial safeguard system that keeps risks under control, create new models of investment and financing, encourage greater cooperation between government and private capital and build a diversified financing system and a multi-tiered capital market. We should also develop inclusive finance and improve financial services networks.” President Xi went on to speak of the funding for the projects, noting that China will work with the AIIB, the BRICS New Development Bank, the World Bank and other multilateral development institutions to support them. “Infrastructure connectivity is the foundation of development through cooperation. We should promote land, maritime, air and cyberspace connectivity, concentrate our efforts on key passageways, cities and projects and connect networks of highways, railways and sea ports. The goal of building six major economic corridors under the Belt and Road Initiative has been set, and we should endeavor to meet it.” Helga Zepp-LaRouche Addresses Think Tanks at Belt and Road Forum Helga Zepp-LaRouche was invited to participate in the “thematic sessions on think tank exchanges” on May 14 and 15, held on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum. On the first day, she was a discussant at the session on the “Belt and Road for Facilitating Strong, Balanced, Inclusive and Sustainable Global Economy”, and on the second day, she was a speaker at the 5th Global Think Tank Summit, “Gathering Wisdoms for Promoting Global Growth”. Zepp-LaRouche addressed the issue from the highest cultural standpoint of the common aims of mankind, as seen in the quotes that follow. “There has been a breathtaking dynamic of the New Silk Road in the three and a half years since it was pronounced by President Xi Jinping in 2013. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has the obvious potential of quickly becoming a World Land Bridge, connecting all continents through infrastructure, such as tunnels, bridges, reinforced by the Maritime Silk Road. As such, it represents a new form of globalization, but not determined by the criteria of profit maximization for the financial sector, but for the harmonious development of all participating countries on the basis of win-win cooperation. “It is therefore important, that one not look at the BRI from the standpoint of an accountant, who projects his statistical viewpoint of cost-benefit into the future, but that we think about it as a ‘Vision for the Community of a Shared Future’. Where do we want humanity as a whole to be in 10, 100, or even in a 1,000 years? Is it not the natural destiny of mankind, as the only creative species known in the universe so far, that we will be building villages on the Moon, that we will develop a deeper understanding of the trillions of galaxies in our universe, solve the problems of as yet incurable diseases, or solve the problem of energy and raw material security through the development of thermonuclear fusion power? By focusing on the common aims of humanity we will be able to overcome geopolitics and establish a higher level of reason for the benefit of all.” The United States, Zepp-LaRouche pointed out, should take advantage of the BRI and “become an integral part of the World Land Bridge”. The European Union should do the same and join in a “Grand Design development plan for all of Africa with the BRI....”
To succeed, “the New Silk Road must -- as the ancient one did -- lead to an exchange of the most beautiful expressions of culture of all participating countries.” Beyond infrastructure and industrial development, we need to “make the joyful discovery in other cultures of the beauty of their classical music, poetry and painting, and, by knowing them, strengthen our love for mankind as a whole.” “In building the World Land Bridge, all nations will cooperate on studying how to apply the laws of the Noosphere to the establishment of durable forms of self-government. The development of the creative mental powers of all people in all nations will give all of mankind the sense of unity and purpose which will make our species truly human. If we organize our societies around scientific and artistic discovery, we will perfect our knowledge of how to continuously advance the process of self-development of mankind, intellectually, morally and aesthetically, and we will find our freedom in necessity -- doing our duty with passion!” Polemic over FBI Director Is a Diversion To properly evaluate the crescendo of demands for the impeachment of President Trump over his firing of FBI Director James Comey, one must first understand that the real reason behind these demands has nothing to do with the firing of Comey!  While there may be some question of the timing -- that is, why he was not dismissed earlier -- many of those now calling for the President’s head, especially among Democrats and anti-Trump media, were on record themselves, calling for the ouster of the FBI Director months ago, in particular because of the scandal around Hillary Clinton’s emails. Trump’s decision was informed by a letter from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein who was assigned to review Comey’s actions in regard to Clinton’s emails. Under the subject heading, “Restoring Public Confidence in the FBI,” Rosenstein wrote: “Over the past year the FBI’s reputation and credibility have suffered substantial damage, and it has affected the entire Department of Justice....I cannot defend the Director’s handling of the investigation of Secretary Clinton’s emails.” Indeed, James Comey clearly usurped the authority of the Attorney General, by announcing publicly in July 2016 that he thought the case should be closed without prosecution, and again in October, by going public with his decision to reopen the investigation. Such decisions/announcements may only be made by the Attorney General or federal prosecutors, Rosenstein points out, with the FBI’s role being confined to one of investigation, not prosecution. But the former FBI Director is now being defended by the networks involved in the “Color Revolution-style” coup to remove Trump. They include the neocons in both parties, the Wall Street-run “Deep State” crowd in the financial and intelligence community, and the media which serve their interests. The FBI has worked with these networks to claim that Trump engaged in “collusion” with Putin, to win the election.  Their real concern is not that Trump acted unconstitutionally by dismissing Comey, nor that he is trying to “cover  up” for his Russian connections, but rather that is moving to break the United States out of the geopolitical and financial order, which put the U.S. on a course toward war with Russia and China, and the financial system on the edge of a potentially devastating blowout. In the last days, Trump met with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and Russian Ambassador Kisylak in the White House -- not to get his orders, as he joked -- but to coordinate U.S.Russian collaboration against jihadist terrorists in Syria, and for

peaceful resolution on the Korean peninsula and Ukraine.  At the same time, his collaboration with China’s President Xi deepened, with the announcement that a top National Security Council official would attend the Belt and Road Initiative Forum in Beijing, while talk of the administration’s commitment to restore GlassSteagall continues to enrage Wall Street speculators. The firing of Comey was part of a warning to the coup plotters that their “blame Putin” game is over.  And it is thus is a necessary part of the “clean-up of Washington”. As Next Bubble Looms, Wall Street Fears  Re-enactment of Glass-Steagall Given the growing threat of an imminent crash of the corporate debt bubble in the United States and internationally, and the concomitant fear that the Trump Administration might reenact Glass-Steagall legislation which would prevent a bailout of the toxic debts, the financial press in New York and London is churning out warnings against any such move. Their fears were fueled by Donald Trump himself in a May 1 interview to Bloomberg News, in which he directly reaffirmed his support for a “21st Century Glass-Steagall” bill, saying, “I’m looking into that right now.” One hour after that, Presidential Press Secretary Sean Spicer noted that the President had just met with the Independent Community Bankers of America, and was “actively considering options” on a modernization of the original bill separating government-insured deposit banks from investment banks. Bloomberg also noted that the “grass-roots base of the Republican and the Democratic Parties -- people like Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren -- have both advocated for the return of Glass-Steagall.”  When Warren was asked by Bloomberg News on May 10 if she would work with the Trump administration to get Glass-Steagall passed, she said that she had no backchannels with the White House yet, but “so far we’ve had some good conversations and that’s what I want to see happen. I’m ready. Because you know, this is one of those basic things -- folks on Wall Street may resist it. But most of the American people get it.” In fact, contrary to remarks from the Trump Administration, there is no reason for the original Glass-Stegall legislation to be “modernized”, other than to specify the prohibition of certain securities/derivatives bets and plays which did not exist in precisely that form 80 years ago. The bills to restore Glass-Steagall that are now pending in the Senate and House of Representatives are adequate in that sense and should be passed now. There are now 9 sponsors in the Senate and 47 in the House, but seven of them have just signed on in the past days, indicating a trend as the debt bomb ticks. Germany: SPD Takes Another Beating, Dimming Perspectives for National Elections The Social Democrats suffered a crushing defeat in the May 14 elections in North-Rhine Westphalia (NRW), Germany’s most populous state with 23% of the national electorate. It is the third state election in a row, after Saarland and SchleswigHolstein, that the SPD has lost since Martin Schulz became the party’s chancellor candidate. The SPD sank from 39% of the vote in last elections, in 2012, to only 31%, while Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats went up from 26.3% in 2012 to 33%. The liberals of the FDP made a surprising comeback with 12%, while the Greens, the coalition partner of the SPD, lost nearly half of their votes, down to barely 6.4% this year from 11.3.
The Social Democrats are now in very bad shape heading for the national elections in September. The “Schulz bonus” which the SPD believed in after he was elected chancellor candidate and national party chairman with 100% of party convention delegates in late January, turns out to be a very short-lived illusion. In reality, Schulz, the president of the European Parliament until the end of 2016, defends the same policies as Angela Merkel, as has been recognized by 66% of the voters in opinion polls. Why vote Schulz, if he is no different from Merkel, most voters ask themselves. But that, of course, is no solution. Despite the profound changes internationally highlighted in the just-concluded Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, Merkel’s course is based on the huge illusion that Germany and Europe can continue to pursue their policies with the discredited “values” of the failed transAtlantic system. They continue to preach that globalization, free market conditions, climate protection and the exit from nuclear power technology are the future, whereas the vast majority of the world has begun to think differently. Merkel, just as Schulz, still believes in a “Europe”  which the British have already deserted , and in a Cold War confrontation with Russia and China, which is increasingly rejected. A true alternative to the Merkel government would acknowledge the global political changes and link Germany and Europe to the pro-industrial, pro-development optimism reflected in the New Silk Road strategy. The SPD is apparently unable – but also unwilling – to formulate such an alternative to Merkel, and thus at this point their defeat in the September national election looks likely. Ukraine: Fascist Hit Squads Attack Opposition Leaders Vitrenko and Marchenko On May 9, the neo-Nazi “National Corps” (former Azov Battalion unit) staged a new attack on Progressive Socialist Party of Ukraine (PSPU) leaders Dr. Natalia Vitrenko and Vladimir Marchenko. On that day of commemoration of victory over fascism in 1945, these two leading anti-fascists in Ukraine, both of them former members of Parliament, heard their doorbells ring and threatening voices outside in the hallways. Gangs from the neo-Nazi “National Corps Party,” formerly a unit of the neo-Nazi Azov Battalion under the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, were attempting to break down the doors of their apartments. During a five-hour stand-off, police refused to remove the attackers forcibly. The neo-Nazis declared that their purpose was to prevent Vitrenko and her PSPU from holding Victory Day rallies or other ceremonies on that day. Vitrenko is famous not only for her nearly quarter-centurylong battle against the murderous imposition of neoliberal monetarist economic policies, but also for warning for two decades of an insurgent fascist movement in Ukraine, marching under Nazi-derived banners and those of Ukrainian 20th-century fascist Stepan Bandera’s Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. In October of last year, the PSPU’s national headquarters and all the party’s records of 20 years were seized on the pretext of a commercial dispute, and turned over to the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), which continues to gestate a case against Vitrenko on trumped-up charges of “separatism” (cf SAS 45/16). On May 4, 2017, Vitrenko had appealed to world leaders to investigate the gross violation of the “rights of citizens of Ukraine to freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of expression of their views and convictions, freedom of association in political parties and public organizations, and freedom of assembly for the peaceful conduct of actions, rallies and demonstrations.” She stated her conviction that if the world

community “fails to condemn these processes in Ukraine” and to force the authorities to put a stop to the activity of the rightwing radicals, “then a Nazi state will be formed in the center of Europe in the near future, and this will give rise to a Third World War.” In a communication on May 12 to friends abroad, Vitrenko voiced hope that Western leaders could be organized to pressure the Ukrainian government to stop the Azov Battalion, which the U.S. Congress has officially recognized as a “neoNazi” group, and its political spin-offs like the National Corps Party. Vitrenko also warned against a possible military coup by Internal Affairs Minister Avakov and allies of his who have also been sponsors of the neo-Nazi gangs. “The Future of the Americas  Lies in the New Silk Road” On May 4, just ten days before the historic One Belt, One Road Forum opened in Beijing, the Schiller Institute and EIR sponsored an international webcast under the above headline, keynoted by Schiller Institute chairwoman Helga Zepp-LaRouche. With their optimistic presentations on what the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) could mean for the future of Ibero-America, Mrs. LaRouche, Peruvian economist Justo Vargas from the Bioceanic Corridor Northern Route Committee, and Gerardo Castilleja from the Citizens LaRouche Movement of Mexico (MOCILA) provoked an excited response from hundreds of listeners, including a large contingent of students, which has reverberated throughout the region in the period following the webcast. Momentum in favor of the global initiative is growing, as reflected in the many commentaries since then about the necessity of Ibero-America participating in the BRI. Although only two Ibero-American heads of state -- Chile’s Michelle Bachelet and Argentina’s Mauricio Macri -- are attending the summit, other governments sent ministerial-level delegations, recognizing that the opportunities offered by the BRI cannot be ignored. In addition, Chile and Bolivia have just announced they have joined the Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), joining Peru, Venezuela and Brazil as Ibero-American members. Even Macri, who normally answers to London and Wall Street interests, couldn’t stay away. In an article published May 5 in the Spanish-language edition of the state-authorized government site, China.org.cn , Argentine ambassador to China, Diego Guelar, wrote that “the 21st century is marked by the appearance and consolidation of China as a super-power, beyond the importance and standing that the U.S. and other countries maintain.” Peru’s Amazon Integration Network, which represents a broad coalition of pro-development forces in Peru’s interior, issued a press release May 7, describing the May 4 webcast (in which it participated) as a “globally important event,” and called on President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski to attend the May 14-15 forum. And in an interview with Xinhua published May 9, Chilean ambassador to China Jorge Heine remarked that the Beijing forum “couldn’t come at a better time.” While Ibero-American participation in the BRI isn’t extensive right now, he said, conditions exist for this to change. Noting that the its original conception focused on Asia, Europe and parts of Africa, he added, “it has now evolved into something much broader, making infrastructure projects and worldwide connectivity” the center of attention of China’s foreign policy. Ibero-America’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative can, and must be expanded, he said.
Toward an Arab-Israeli Peace Agreement Mediated by Moscow and Washington? U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are cooperating in an effort to mediate a peace process between the Arab countries and Israel. Hosting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on May 3 (cf. SAS 19/20), Trump expressed his commitment to helping forge such an agreement. Just eight days later, Abbas was received by Putin in Sochi where the peace process was a major point of discussion. Following his meeting with Putin, Abbas stressed that it is “impossible to solve the Palestinian issue without Russia’s meaningful participation in the peace process.” He also reiterated that he is willing to participate “at any time” in a trilateral meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Putin in Moscow. Palestinian Deputy Prime Minister Ziad Abu Amr told Sputnik, that the “coordination between Russia and the United States in arranging the meeting between Palestine and Israel is likely and we welcome it.” Meanwhile, the Russian President is attempting to improve relations with Israel, especially in the energy sector, and enjoys support in certain Israeli political circles, especially with Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman, who leads an Israeli Russian party and was himself born in the former Soviet Union. Later this month, Trump will visit Saudi Arabia and then on May 22 and 23, he will be in Jerusalem where he will meet Netanyahu and then travel to Bethlehem to meet Abbas. There is speculation that Trump might even organize a trilateral meeting with Netanyahu and Abbas. The big question mark is “Bibi” Netanyahu. Neither he nor most of his coalition partners want a peace process. Neither do his neocon friends in the U.S. including former Middle East Envoy Dennis Ross and the notorious Elliot Abram. Nonetheless, Trump does have important allies in the American Jewish community who are influential in Israel and the region. The most important is Ronald Lauder of the Estee Lauder cosmetic fortune, who is now head of the World Jewish Congress. The Lauder and Trump families have been close for decades, in business, politics and as friends. An old Reagan Republican, Lauder was one of the few Jewish leaders who came out in full support of Trump, and he shares Trump’s respect for Putin as a Russian patriot and a strong and smart leader. Lauder has worked on and off as a peace emissary for the last two decades. He has not only met with Palestinian leaders but also most Arab leaders, and is said to have played an important role in the Arab peace initiative of 2002. It is now reported that he met with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas prior to the latter’s meeting with Trump in order to brief him on how best to interact with Trump. He also met several times with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, whom he greatly respects. All this has earned him the ire of Netanyahu, who is said to view him as the most “dangerous” influence on Trump.
