Cyprus Maritime Dispute: Rising Tensions Amid Calls for Dialogue
A new maritime delimitation agreement, signed November 26 between Republic of Cyprus and Lebanon, has reignited tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean. Turkey condemned the deal, arguing it ignores the rights of Turkish Cypriots and disregards their interests. Ankara’s reaction came along with a sharper rhetoric toward both Greece and Cyprus, including warnings against unilateral energy or infrastructure projects in the region.
In response, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, reaffirmed his government's readiness to sit down with Turkey to negotiate maritime boundaries under international law (including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea). He called on Ankara to join Cyprus at the negotiating table if it is confident in its positions.
German MP urges reopening of Halki Theological School
