Dear friends,
The Amazon is hurtling to the point of no return.
If destruction continues, vast areas of the world's largest rainforest could collapse into dry savanna, releasing a climate bomb that will scorch the planet.
The rainforest can't defend itself. But Indigenous people do.
When loggers and oil giants invade, Indigenous communities barricade the roads. They block the bulldozers. It's no accident their territories are the healthiest, best-protected parts of the Amazon.
And they're calling for help.
The Amazon and its guardians are facing their biggest attack in 40 years. Brazilian politicians are on the verge of passing a package of destruction laws. Even the most precious pockets of rainforest could be cracked open to mining and oil drilling. And under Colombia's new President, there are now fears of fracking.
That's why we're launching one of our biggest campaigns ever to defend Amazon.
Avaaz has identified 20 critically important parcels of the Amazon to protect. If enough of us chip in, we can help Indigenous communities buy and secure legal rights to these life-giving lands -- we're about to secure the first two!
And in Brazil, your donation will help us build a thundering movement to protect the forest -- reaching tens of millions through WhatsApp, protests, and media stunts. We'll defend the rights of Indigenous communities, and when politicians try to tear down forest laws, we'll be able to mobilise thousands in a heartbeat!
This is a battle for the heart and soul of the Amazon rainforest -- and the clock is ticking. Please donate what you can now:
Avaaz members have been powerful Amazon defenders for years.
Just last year, we helped Indigenous communities secure legal rights to rainforest territories almost the size of Belgium, giving them stronger protections against loggers and miners. We also funded forest nurseries to bring critical parts of the Amazon back to life.
But today, the stakes are higher than ever. As the rainforest is pushed closer to a catastrophic tipping point, far-right politicians are leading an unprecedented assault on the Amazon and the Indigenous Peoples who defend it.
If they succeed, they won't just accelerate logging and oil drilling -- they'll dismantle the very protections that have kept vast areas of the Amazon alive and off limits.
We have to mount an almighty defence of the Amazon rainforest. If we raise enough, together we can:
Put more rainforest into Indigenous hands: Defend hard-won Indigenous land rights in Brazil, and help purchase and legally secure two priority rainforest areas in the Colombian Amazon;
Build a massive citizen's movement in Brazil: Reach millions of people through social media and grassroots organising to defend the Amazon and challenge the politicians who destroy it;
Support Indigenous resistance: Bring Indigenous leaders to Congress, courts, and global forums to expose the impact of oil, logging and mining on their lands;
Restore forests and rivers: Help Indigenous communities collect native seeds, restore rivers, plant medicinal trees, and bring damaged land back to life;
Go to the courts: Defend Indigenous land rights and challenge new oil drilling that threatens the Amazon.
The next few months will be decisive in whether the Amazon ultimately survives. Please donate what you can now:
Most of us hear about the Amazon only after it's cut down. This time, we can act before the roads are cut, before the mines are dug, before the drilling rigs arrive. Let's make sure that in years to come we can tell the story with pride about how this community came together to protect the Earth's most precious rainforest.
For the natural world, Kaitlin, Laura, Mauricio, Mike, Adela, Nell and the whole Avaaz team
