| On the Verge of a New World War: |
European Nations Must Cooperate with the Global South!
|
We are presently experiencing tectonic changes in the strategic order: a war is raging in the middle of Europe, peace is threatened by the danger of the world separating into two blocs, with the U.S, the U.K., the EU and NATO on the one side, and Russia, China and the “Global South” on the other.
|
Western elites only recently discovered that the nations of the Global South will no longer submit to the dictates of the “Washington Consensus”, and are reorienting themselves to the economic potentials of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year.
|
Apparently unable to grasp that historic shift (as Josep Borrell put it: “Europe is a beautiful garden, the rest of the world is a jungle”), they came to this recognition rather late. After the trans-Atlantic powers failed to contribute to the development of the Global South during 500 years of colonialism and 80 years of the post-war period, the nations of the developing sector are now determined to end colonialism for good.

The larger context for the war in Ukraine lies in that epochal shift. With the attempt to expand NATO in the Indo-Pacific comes the acute danger that a war scenario similar to that in Ukraine will be repeated in Asia, by encouraging the independence of Taiwan. That would mean a war between the U.S. and China. Europe, absent any negotiated peace initiative to end the Ukraine conflict, and locked into the Global NATO strategy, is being pulled into a war, which is fundamentally against its existential self-interest.

Europe must therefore assert its autonomy and cooperate with the countries of the Global South and with their effort to build a new economic system, which would allow them to overcome poverty and underdevelopment.
|
Rather than leading to the “end of history”, as Francis Fukuyama assumed when the Soviet Union disintegrated, the attempt to impose the neo-liberal system worldwide has backfired, and it is now clearly failing. To remedy the situation, we must urgently organize a new paradigm in international relations, by putting a new global security and development architecture on the agenda.

Above all: if Europe is to not only survive this strategic crisis, but play a constructive role in shaping the coming epoch, we have to revive the best traditions and classical periods of our continent.

A culture to emancipate and expand the creative capacities of every human being. A dialogue among cultures and civilizations to reach a harmony of dissonances, to which each one contributes the best of its own.

Scientific ecology and assessing the climate challenge. Eradicating poverty and hunger in the world is the priority.
