Greece: One of the top performers on the Democracy Index for 2022

After The Economist listed Greece as the unlikely economic winner of 2022, the Economist Intelligence Unit has now highlighted the country as one of the best performers on its Democracy Index for 2022, with Greece registering the fifth-biggest increase in score of all the countries covered by the index. Nikos Efstathiou, the deputy editor in chief at the weekly magazine LiFO and a former journalist with Kathimerini, joins The Greek Current as we look into this Greek comeback, and explore the work that needs to be done as Greece strengthens its economy and democracy.

Akar in new anti-Greek tantrum

Straight from the playbook of Turkish President Erdogan, Defense Minister Hulusi Akar engaged in a new round of accusations against Greece on Thursday, claiming it is “escalating provocative actions.” His incendiary rhetoric came on the heels of comments made by Erdogan on Monday night, presenting Turkey as the victim that is reacting. In an interview with state television network TRT, the Turkish president attacked Greece, claiming it is being provocative and violating Turkey’s naval space. Meanwhile, Greek authorities said a total of 23 Turkish aircraft, 18 of which were armed, carried out 14 violations of Greek airspace and 12 violations of the Athens Flight Information Region (FIR) on Wednesday.

US Congress says F-16 sale to Turkey depends on NATO approval

In a letter to President Biden, 29 Democratic and Republican senators said they cannot support the $20 billion sale of F-16 fighter jets to Turkey until Ankara ratifies the NATO memberships of Sweden and Finland. While the letter does not promise that Congress will approve the F-16 sale if Ankara ratifies Sweden and Finland’s NATO bids, it makes it clear that without it, it won't even consider the move. The Biden administration has repeatedly said it supports the sale and refused to link the two issues, although it acknowledged that the ratification of Sweden and Finland’s NATO accession would facilitate the sale process in Congress.
