April 2023

April 2023

Dear Friends,

THI has launched our annual Easter Appeal. Each year we select a different grantee in Greece to be the subject of this special fundraising appeal in the weeks leading up to Easter.

This year, DIATROFI is our recipient. DIATROFI is a food aid program, run by the Prolepsis Institute, which supports public school students (ages 6-18) in socioeconomically vulnerable areas throughout Greece. The program distributes a free daily meal to all students in the participating schools. In the 2022-23 school year alone, DIATROFI will serve 186 schools, representing 7,517 students. 48% of children served would not have access to an adequate meal without the daily meal provided by DIATROFI.

As Diaspora Greeks who may visit Greece for vacation, it is easy to forget that Greece is a complex society with modern societal problems, including hunger and food scarcity. And Greece does not yet have the well-developed social welfare safety net or a robust non-profit sector to address these human needs.

From the beginning, addressing these gaps in Greece has been an important part (40%) of THI’s mission. If we as the Diaspora will not come to the assistance of our own people, who will?

You can make a difference this Easter.

Each year, we hear from our donors that as they gather for our beloved Easter traditions, they feel immense gratitude for our heritage and want to see this endure always. Supporting Greece and its people is an important way to ensure that this flame burns brightly for generations to come.

We hope you will consider supporting Greece this Easter.

Kalo Pascha.

Oli Mazi,

Tina Courpas, Executive Director
The Hellenic Initiative

THI's Easter Appeal

This Easter Season, The Hellenic Initiative is partnering with Program DIATROFI (Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition), to support school-age students (6-18 years old) who face food insecurity and hunger. DIATROFI, with the assistance of the Prolepsis Institute, delivers 6,453 meals per day to feed children in need. For many of these children, their school lunch is their only full meal of the day.

THI Plants 500 Trees in Chios and 2,000 Trees in Varympompi

In early March, The Hellenic Initiative organized a tree-planting campaign on the island of Chios. Approximately 500 trees were planted in the area of Kalamoti, to re-forest an area that was burned in 2019 and never restored. The planting was made possible by a generous gift from Michael Psaros. On March 24th, THI partnered with Coca-Cola Hellas and planted 2,000 additional trees in Varympompi, an area outside of Athens that was affected in 2021. You can contribute to this effort by planting trees for a special occasion, to honor or memorialize a loved one, or to support the restoration of Greek lands.

Archimedean Schools:  Devotion to Hellenism Combined with Commitment to Excellence

This month, we share the extraordinary story of the Archimedean Schools in Miami, Florida.

The Archimedean Schools began with the vision of John Haralambides, a Diaspora Greek whose family emigrated from Asia Minor. Haralambides had a vision to establish a school in the United States that would preserve the Greek language at the highest levels of learning by employing teachers from Greece. Students would not only be required to take Greek but would take other subjects of the core curriculum in the Greek language. Today, the Archimedean Schools have grown to four institutions with a student body of 1,350, producing outstanding results and sending their graduates to the nation’s most competitive colleges and universities.
