In Memoriam

With deep sadness, we were notified of the passing of Calliope Caloyera Babu-Khan (1928-2025), a founding supporter of the Caloyeras Center for Modern Greek Studies at LMU and a longstanding member of the American Hellenic Council.

Calliope, a resident of Pacific Palisades, was a talented artist whose passion for supporting the arts leaves a lasting legacy in promoting Greek culture and heritage. Calliope is survived by her daughter Nasreen Babu-Khan, son-in-law Howard Lehrhoff, grandchildren Alexander, Nicholas, Gregory, Andrew, and Michael, sister-in-law Beverly Caloyeras, and dear nieces and nephew Alexandra, Aliki, and Basil as well as their children. Her legacy lives on through her artwork and the many lives she touched. In honor of her memory, instead of wreaths, the family requests donations to the Caloyeras Center at LMU, ensuring that her vision and love for the arts and Greek heritage continue to inspire future generations.

The Eastern Mediterranean: Cyprus and the Geopolitics of Turkish Irredentism

The Eastern Mediterranean is increasingly becoming a geopolitical battleground, where competing claims over maritime rights, energy resources, and regional influence converge. The Republic of Cyprus (RoC) faces escalating challenges from Turkey’s irredentist and Neo-Ottoman agenda, epitomised by its proclaimed ‘Blue Homeland’ (Mavi Vatan) doctrine. This concept, echoing China’s ‘Blue Soil’ strategy from 2010, underscores Ankara’s ambition to assert and maintain maritime dominance in the region.

Turkey’s Syria and Libya strategies add up to a Mediterranean power play

The Mediterranean has always been a theater of rivalries, shifting alliances, and calculated gambles, and Turkey has once again thrown its dice.

Ankara’s announcement of a potential Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) agreement with Syria’s new government mirrors Turkey’s 2019 maritime pact with Libya’s Government of National Accord (GNA). That earlier agreement allowed Turkey to claim a foothold in the Eastern Mediterranean, reshaping regional dynamics to its advantage. Today, Ankara is pursuing a similar strategy in Syria, seeking to create facts on water as it did on land, using the promise of economic and political support to position itself as a dominant player in the country. These parallel maneuvers underscore Ankara’s broader vision of Libya and Syria as interconnected pillars of its geopolitical strategy in the Mediterranean, where actions in one arena bolster influence in the other.
