 "No action against Turks unless I order it" • The June 1, 1974 – prophetically, as it were – Bonanos, in a secret document, orders the chiefs of staff to avoid provocations against Turkey. Any action against Turkey would only be taken after his own order. (01.06.1974) • On July 18 at 11.00, American ministers Cisco and Ellsworth inform Bonano of the possibility of a Turkish invasion of Cyprus. - 18.07.1974 • At 18.00, Bonanos conveys to the staffs distorted information that the reactions from the Turkish side were considered… encouraging. “Ioannidis assured me that the Turks will not get involved” • At 19.00 he conveys the assessment: “…Ioannidis assured me many times that the Turks will not get involved, because the Americans are also in favor of the overthrow of Makarios and will stand by us, in any case.” Indeed, as emerges from the testimony given on June 29, 1975 to the Congressional subcommittee by the US ambassador to Athens, Henry Taska, Ioannidis maintained direct contact with the CIA station chief. In fact, he assured the other junta members that he “had guarantees from all interested parties, especially from the USA, that in the event of a coup against Makarios, Turkey would not intervene” (testimonies by Georgitsis, Kompokis, Palainis, Pilichou, etc.). • Friday, July 19 at 03:00, the Kyrenia station intercepted a signal with instructions to the Turkish Cypriots. At 21:00, Nicosia notified Athens that “Turkish landing craft had been seen”. The staff replied: “This is an exercise”. The Chief of the Hellenic National Defence Staff, Gr. Bonanos, declared that “no excuses should be given to the Turks”. He preferred to spend the night in the military camps of Agios Andreas. - 19.07.1974 • July 20, 1974 at 08.40 the Hellenic National Defense General Staff refuses to give approval to the General Staff of the National Guard. It reassures that this is an exercise by the Turkish army and recommends self-restraint. (20.07.1974) "The Turks are burning us!" - "Do you see ghosts?" The artificial complacency cultivated by Bonanos and his associates is also confirmed by Major General Poulos, narrating a conversation he had with Brigadier General Sp. Dreams? • Since 06.10, however, he knew about the beginning of the Turkish landing. • Until 20.00, when the War Council was convened, Bonanos was performing… other duties. • At 22.00, orders were given to implement repulse plans. • Years later (July 1986) before the parliamentary committee he brazenly admitted that he had not contacted the General Directorate of the Armed Forces all day: “When I went to the AED on the morning of the invasion, I did not contact Cyprus. It was not my job to contact the General Directorate of the Armed Forces. I had other priorities to attend to. I did not take the General Directorate of the Armed Forces all day on July 20, 1974. But they took me…”. The Turks advanced – Bonanos was afraid of the Bulgarians! • On the morning of July 21, Bonanos pompously announced to the leaders of the three branches that it had been decided to declare war against Turkey. Of course, it did not happen. (21.07.1974). • They declare general mobilization and dispatch of a squadron of commandos, three submarines, the 573rd volunteer infantry battalion and 30 Fantoms. Only the first was carried out in comically tragic circumstances. In the same committee, the “renegade junta” Navy chief P. Arapakis acquits him: “At 13.00 he issued an order to recall two submarines (“Glaucos” and “Nireus”) “for the defense of the Aegean from any attack from… the north”.
