An expensive disaster for most people with newer autos;
My
automatic transmission failed last week. Something serious broke inside. So,
I`m going to switch out both engine and transmission to see what my gas mileage
is with the smaller 305 V8, also. - Just for fun.

Once started, it should only take say, 4 short afternoons to do the job in the back yard. It`s a real blessing to have units already "run tested" - ready to go.
[A modern melee with modern "de-sulphered" oils, changed for the modern catalytic converters; Camshafts and lifters can tend to wear out now.]
The orange 305 engine [photo] was a running take-out of Rusty`s `81 Chevy Truck. I disassembled it and found it mostly quite "good", but the camshaft was worn to where it was running on 7 cylinders all the time [this top photo;]. So it got a new stock camshaft, lifters, rings, etc. I "fixed" everything that needed it, then ran-tested it in the spare truck frame. Because it is "stock", it`s personality is much more "tame" at idle than the Tri-Star "Hot Rod" engine.
Worn off lobe on the camshaft photo; #1 cylinder intake valve would not be opening with this. Separate lobe way over to the right is the fuel pump "pusher".

You can see another spare transmission in this photo; Another spare 1986 305 V8
from a Chevy Caprice is in that wooden box. - Needs a valve job real bad! But
it too is potentially a very good engine with just minor work required.
Looks like a photo of a new engine - transmission set up for 1973-82 Truck or
Corvette; The classic Chevy V8. 1955 - on; 50+ Years!!! L.
