 Chicago, IL - Today marks one year since our
dear friend and beloved Founder, Mr. Chris P. Tomaras, passed away. Mr.
Tomaras will be remembered for his love of Hellenism, his entrepreneurial
spirit, his devotion to his faith, and his infinite generosity.
Over the
past year, Mr. Tomaras' absence has been profoundly felt in the Greek
American community, where he was deeply loved and admired, and was known
to always offer support when it was needed. Mr. Tomaras was a successful
businessman and inventor as founder of the Kronos Foods empire, but he
was also tirelessly devoted to his philanthropic activities. He felt that
this was his most important work.
Mr.
Tomaras' passion for education inspired him to establish the PanHellenic
Scholarship Foundation in 1998. He adamantly believed in the necessity of
earning a college degree, and founded the organization so that deserving
Greek American undergraduates would have the means to complete their
education.
The
Foundation's Chairman, Robert A. Buhler, said of the one-year anniversary
of Mr. Tomaras' passing, "This October has taken on a great
significance for me, as I honor the memory of my close friend, Chris
Tomaras, and also mourn the very recent loss of my own father. I admired
Mr. Tomaras because he was very much like my father: humble, warm, and
overwhelmingly generous. This year without him has been one of great
transition and change at the Foundation, and we will continue to work
hard to realize Mr. Tomaras' dream."
Yanni
Valsamas, Executive Director of the Foundation, added, "It is hard
to believe that it has been one year since Mr. Tomaras left us. It has
certainly been difficult not to have him with us, but we take comfort in
knowing that his dream for the Foundation is being fulfilled. We are
committed to working hard to honor his legacy."
Mr.
Tomaras' one year memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 23,
2016, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Chicago, Illinois. The
Divine Liturgy will start at 9:30 am. Immediately following, a Fellowship
Hour in honor of Mr. Tomaras' memory will be held in the St. George
Community Center.
