No improvements came until the late 1800`s! Women didn`t have shampoo for their hair so it stayed dirty!!! Look at Lillian Gish back then. Her hair looks pretty dirty! Only pain killer when you needed dental work was get drunk on whiskey. They needed teeth pulled often because they chewed chewing tabacco. Barber or Blacksmith pulled teeth. Outhouses were really smelly! The other hazard back then; Black Widow spiders would make a web across the seat and BITE YOUR BUTT making you sick for a week. Smallpox - a terrible disease, but Cholera would KILL You. Caused by drinking bad water. Common in the old Wild West. Everyone was drinking surface water. Prostitution was VERY POPULAR but the women generally had Siphilis and Gonorrhea which spread like crazy! Beds were mostly homemade from rope and straw. Toilet paper was for the rich. Everyone else used leaves, straw, newspaper, corn cobs, and rags - whatever was available. People in the old Wild West wore their clothes to bed to fight off bed bugs.
