It`s doing it the hard way but the AR-15 is getting expensive. The benefit here; Saving money and You learn about your gun. Important since the AR-15 has a bunch of little parts and springs. And, You end up with a Ghost gun. Why is this one popular? From then on it`s just filing and careful assembly. Finished 1928 Thompson receiver; A much more difficult challenge is "making" a Thompson SMG reciever. You must have the front section the barrel screws into with that deep acme thread to start. Rather than machining it all from one block of steel, I machined the sides, top, back and parts seperate and welded them together. You must be a precision machinist and welder to attempt this. [photos;] I gave the bolt .020" clearance all around which worked fine. The old war horse fires beautifully, hence the name; "Old Smoothey".
