THE FESTIVALS OF THE CABEIRIAN MYSTERIES (Part 2)

The festivals of the Cabeirian Mysteries were celebrated on the island of Samothrace during the summer, in the month of Hekatombaion (approximately from mid-July to mid-August). Pilgrims from all over Greece, the Aegean islands, and throughout the Mediterranean flocked to the sanctuary, seeking oracles concerning their seafaring relatives.

The principal sacred ceremony was the "Sacred Marriage" of Pluto (Hades) with the goddess of fertility and, according to tradition, it bore similarities to the Eleusinian Mysteries. All lights were extinguished, and the faithful awaited the arrival of the sacred flame by ship from Delos, the sacred center of Hellenism. The High Priest, known as Adamas ("Diamond") or Krystallinos ("Crystal"), received the sacred light and lit the first candle. Thereafter, those in attendance lit one another's candles while whispering prayers to Demeter and Persephone.

Those wishing to be initiated into the Mysteries fasted for nine days, underwent a ritual purification bath, and confessed their deeds before the Koes (the confessor-priest). Upon receiving the approval of the temple officiants, they were admitted to the first degree of initiation and were granted the title of Kadmilos.

The festivals were followed by libations, animal sacrifices, dances accompanied by musical instruments, and ritual cries in honor of Rhea. Afterwards, priests, priestesses, and the candidates for initiation gathered in a great hall where they witnessed the secret ceremonies. They were then led into the innermost sanctuary, and after completing the initiation they were entered into the sacred registers and officially received the title of Kadmilos. Those who advanced to the second degree of initiation acquired the title of Epoptes ("Overseer" or "Initiate of the Higher Degree").

The initiated wore an olive wreath upon their heads and a red ribbon across their foreheads as symbols of their initiation.
