Glyphosate is known as the bee-killing pesticide. But it’s not just bees.
It’s one of the most toxic things ever produced on the planet, with horrifying health impacts. It's been found in babies’ nappies, may lead to pregnancy problems, respiratory diseases, and may lead to pregnancy problems, and a major study says that it increases the risk of some cancers by over 40 percent!!
But in weeks we have a golden opportunity to ban this toxic poison for good.
It all comes down to one vote in the EU Council -- and pesticide giants are pulling out all the stops to lobby politicians and protect their profits.
We can’t let it happen.
If we can't trust all politicians to do the right thing, we have to trust each other to create the change we need -- and that starts right now. In 2018 we won a historical ban against bee-killing pesticides, and now we'll do it again! To EU leaders & Member States’ representatives of the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed:
As concerned citizens from across the European Union, we call on you to immediately suspend approval of glyphosate, present in herbicides widely used all over Europe. People should not be exposed to toxic products that not only damage our precious ecosystems, but also harm our health and can lead to cancer.
Pesticides are good for profits, not for people. And certainly not for the planet.
Again and again, industry giants put forward one-sided reports to persuade policymakers and farmers that pesticides are necessary to feed the world. But scientists agree that spraying toxic chemicals on our fields is a short-term fix with catastrophic implications and affects our long-term ability to get food on the table.
Simple measures such as crop rotation and innovating our agricultural sector to support farmers and work alongside nature, rather than destroy it, benefits everyone. And crucially, by eliminating glyphosate, we could finally get on track for 50% less hazardous pesticides by 2030. That's why this upcoming vote is so critical.
Every EU country plays a key role in the decision-making process and every vote counts! So wherever you are, add your name to supercharge our appeal for an ambitious ban:
Over the years our Avaaz community has fought to stop pesticide giants from poisoning Mother Earth. In 2018 we helped win a ban on bee-killing neonicotinoids. But to win in the long-run, we also need laws to keep toxic chemicals out of our bodies, our plates and our playgrounds.
