Urgent: Like fossil fuel giants misled us about climate risks for decades to make billions, Big Tech companies are now sidestepping AI's dangers for greed. Even worse, they are pushing the EU to wipe out human rights protections from the first ever AI Bill, arguing that protecting our human rights will hurt the economy! We’ve seen this act before, this time we can’t let greed win! Germany and France can ensure human rights are protected, but their ministers are siding with the tech lobbyists – assuming no one is paying attention. Let’s prove them wrong! If we make this huge, we’ll deliver this petition directly to their next meeting, and show them we’re watching.
The age of artificial intelligence is here and full of promise – but one factor could spoil everything.
And that is greed.
We’ve seen this before, with fossil fuel companies blocking environmental protections to boost their profits, even when they knew the dangers – leading us down the path to climate change, which now threatens all life on Earth.
The threat of AI is just starting, but is equally severe: this is the only technology that can make decisions for itself, surveil us without our knowledge, communicate with us, and that one day could be smarter than us.
Will AI be designed to help humanity flourish, or will it be designed to make a few billionaires even richer?
The answer is being decided right now in Europe: lawmakers are debating the laws to govern AI. Terrifyingly (but not surprisingly) tech lobbies are pushing politicians to ignore human rights, putting their profits first.
We have to stop them!
If enough of us sign, we can turn up the heat on the ministers of France and Germany, for siding with greed over human rights, and break the scandal open before their next meeting! We have to act fast: their next meeting is in just a few days!
Dear Ministers Jean-Noël Barrot (France) and Volker Wissing (Germany):
Artificial intelligence holds much promise – and great risk. If left unchecked, it will be used to perpetrate massive human rights abuses, destroy workers’ rights and could even lead to human extinction.
We call on you to protect society from these threats by making sure effective human rights protections are at the heart of the EU’s new AI law.
Your first duty is to protect people, and if you don’t adopt strong human rights assessments and protections against AI, we could forfeit the basic rights humanity has fought so dearly to uphold.
AI is already being used for oppression, mass surveillance, and discrimination, and it is ruining lives. Militaries are developing deadly, autonomous AI weaponry and refugees are targeted by AI border drones. Biased AI systems have torn kids from their families by profiling their parents as criminals.
And it’s about to get A LOT worse – unless we regulate AI.
Yet regulating it without human rights at the core would miss the point entirely, tarnish the EU’s role in human rights protections, and leave all Europeans vulnerable.
But we can still turn this around! If we take a firm stand for human rights and turn up the heat on ministers – we can seize this opportunity to make AI safe for everyone and put people before profit!
When social media unleashed a tidal wave of disinformation onto our democracies, Avaaz responded with creative ideas and expert advocacy, helping to pass powerful laws to protect people. When we come together, our voices cannot be ignored and governments listen. Now we need to do it again – and this time the stakes are even higher.
With hope and determination,
Marco, Fadi, Sarah, Joana, Nadia and the whole team at Avaaz
