BLINKEN: Tenth Anniversary of the Ghouta, Syria Chemical Weapons Attack 08/21/2023 August 21, 2023 Tenth Anniversary of the Ghouta, Syria Chemical Weapons Attack Ten years ago the Assad regime launched rockets carrying the deadly nerve agent sarin into the Ghouta district of Damascus, killing more than 1,400 people.   The United States remembers and honors the victims and survivors of the Ghouta attack and of the other chemical attacks launched by the Assad regime.  Ten years on, we continue to seek justice and accountability for those responsible for these horrific acts.   Despite its international obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and UN Security Council Resolution 2118, Syria has yet to fully declare and verifiably eliminate its chemical weapons program.  Syria refuses to take any responsibility for its vile campaign of chemical weapons use, as is evident from Syria’s nine subsequent chemical weapons attacks confirmed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Investigation and Identification Team and the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism.   We will continue to support the calls by the Syrian people and civil society for justice and accountability for atrocities committed in Syria, and to stand with Syrians in working for a future in which their human rights are respected. Blinken, Secretary of State Ten years ago the Assad regime launched rockets carrying the deadly nerve agent sarin into the Ghouta district of Damascus, killing more than 1,400 people. The United States remembers and honors the victims and survivors of the Ghouta attack and of the other chemical attacks launched by the Assad regime. Ten years on, we continue to seek justice and accountability for those responsible for these horrific acts. Despite its international obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and UN Security Council Resolution 2118, Syria has yet to fully declare and verifiably eliminate its chemical weapons program. Syria refuses to take any responsibility for its vile campaign of chemical weapons use, as is evident from Syria’s nine subsequent chemical weapons attacks confirmed by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) Investigation and Identification Team and the OPCW-UN Joint Investigative Mechanism. We will continue to support the calls by the Syrian people and civil society for justice and accountability for atrocities committed in Syria, and to stand with Syrians in working for a future in which their human rights are respected. MEDIA NOTE: Assistant Secretary of State Satterfield Travels to India 08/21/2023 August 21, 2023 Assistant Secretary of State Satterfield Travels to India From August 22-27, 2023, Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) Lee Satterfield will travel to India to lead the United States’ delegation to the Group of 20 (G20) Culture Ministerial in Varanasi, India. The Assistant Secretary’s trip comes on the heels of Prime Minister Modi’s official state visit to the United States in June and precedes the G20 Leaders’ Summit which is slated to occur in early September. In Varanasi, Assistant Secretary Satterfield will address the G20 Culture Ministerial on Saturday, August 26, as well as participate in several bilateral meetings with G20 members and partners, including UNESCO. The Assistant Secretary’s participation underscores the United States’ strong commitment to protecting, preserving, and promoting culture through robust international engagement, and our support for the G20 Culture Working Group. Prior to the G20 Culture Ministerial, Satterfield will travel to New Delhi, India, to visit an Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) project site, tour the American Center in New Delhi (ACND), and engage with exchange program alumni. She will also meet with government officials and key private-sector stakeholders to discuss a host of shared priorities, including international education, sports diplomacy, cultural heritage, and the creative economy.
